Japan’s cooling body wipe sheets want to help you beat the heat, but which ones work and which ones don’t?

Testing 13 different body wipes to see which ones will get us through Japan’s hot and sticky summer.

You know how sometimes people say “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”? Well in Japan in the summer it’s the heat and humidity.

Recently, whenever our Japanese-language reporter Mariko Ohanabatake steps out of her house and away from her air conditioner, whether it’s walking to the station to catch the train to the office or just running errands around the neighborhood, she ends up hot and clammy. Luckily for her, Japanese pharmacies and convenience stores are selling body wipes with special cooling properties to help you feel refreshed and pleasantly cooled. Unfortunately, however, there are so many different brands it’s hard to choose between them.

So to solve this problem, Mariko tested 13 different types of cooling body wipes, classifying them into four categories: how low they make you fall, how long the cooling sensation lasts, how easy it is to wipe your entire body (neck, arms, torso and legs) with a single sheet, and the cost of performance. After three weeks, she’s ready to release her results and rankings, so let’s take a look.

● Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper (30 sheets per pack, 605 yen [$US4.40])

Nice: ★★★★★
Long duration: ★★★★☆ (35 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★☆☆
Cost performance: ★★★☆☆

“The king of coolness among body sheets, and super easy to find in almost any store. As you wipe away, an unparalleled cooling and invigorating sensation gradually builds, and it also contains an antibacterial effect to avoid sweat smells. The only downside is that the high alcohol content means the sheets themselves can dry out quickly.”

● Biore Men’s Chozetsu Cool Type Body Sheet (28 sheets, 400 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★★☆ (25 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★★
Cost performance: ★★★☆☆

“These are cool, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call them chozetsu (“transcendent”). They stay nice and moist, so it’s easy to wipe down with a single sheet, and they deliver a consistent level of freshness throughout their effect. These are only available in a scented version, and the aroma is a masculine, ocean-like scent.

● AG Deo 24 Clear Shower Sheet (Cold) (30 sheets, 657 yen)

Nice: ★★★★★
Long duration: ★★★★★ (30 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★☆☆
Cost performance: ★★☆☆☆

“It’s like a cool wind blowing all over your body!” These also do an amazing job of removing body sweat odor, although they are a bit pricey.

● Sea Breeze face and body sheet (30 sheets, 539 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★☆☆ (15 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★☆☆
Cost performance: ★★☆☆☆

“The individual sheets are great, but they dry pretty quickly, so I could barely wipe off my upper body if I only used one. These are supposed to be soft enough to use on your face as well. , but with a cooling sensation that builds up over time, they can be a little uncomfortable near your eyes and nose.

● Biore Hiya sheet (20 sheets, 460 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★☆☆ (20 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★☆
Cost performance: ★★★☆☆

“The cooling sensation occurs immediately after you wipe off your skin and continues to build, feeling downright chilly in about five minutes. They also contain a moisturizing powder, which makes them a big seller with women. You don’t get a lot of sheets in the pack, but that makes it compact and easy to slip into your bag to take with you.

● Biore Hiya towel (5 sheets, 580 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★★★★ (30-40 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★★
Cost performance: ★☆☆☆☆

“These are individually wrapped, so it’s easy to put one or two in your bag. They’re as big as a face towel, so you can lay them on the back of your neck when you’ve finished toweling yourself. , so they are perfect for exercise sessions or outdoor events. [and yes, they broke Mariko’s five-point scale in the “long-lasting” category”].”

● Bioré Hiya Group (3 sheets, 580 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★★★★★ (45-60 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★★
Cost performance: ★☆☆☆☆

“At 92 centimeters [36.2 inches], they are so big that you can wrap them around your body or your head! Even walking around in the hottest part of the day for 30 minutes, I didn’t break a sweat with these on, and they’d be great to tuck under the bottom layer of your kimono if you’re going to a summer festival. If only they weren’t so expensive…”

● Biore Leaf Z Sarahiya Hadakan (20 sheets, 500 yen)

Nice: ★☆☆☆☆
Long duration: ★☆☆☆☆ (5 minutes)

● Ban Sapparikan Premium Sheet Cool Type (30 sheets, 450 yen)

Nice: ★★★★☆
Long duration: ★★★★☆ (25 minutes)
Full body single sheet wiping capacity: ★★☆☆☆
Cost performance: ★★★☆☆

“This is another that just came out this year. The leaves are thick, but they’re also small, so they tend to puff up when you use them, making them difficult to wipe off. However, they work well if you only do your neck, arms and armpits About a minute after wiping off, the coolness is so strong it gave me goosebumps, so it’s a good choice to use a bit before to leave the house to stay cool during your entire walk to the station.

● Happy Deo Sheet Gokuhie (36 sheets, 495 yen)

Nice: ★★★☆☆
Long duration: ★★★★☆ (15 minutes)
Full body single sheet wiping capacity: ★★☆☆☆
Cost performance: ★★★★☆

“These are made by Mandom, the same company that makes Gatsby Ice Deodorant body paper. Despite the cute Disney packaging, these are mighty cold. The sheets are small, so you’ll use an entire one just wiping your upper body. Often you can find them for sale in pharmacies for around 300 yen, which is a very good price.

● Matsukiyo Men’s Body Sheet Super Cool (36 sheets, 328 yen)

Nice: ★★★☆☆
Long duration: ★★★☆☆ (15 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★☆
Cost performance: ★★★★☆

“These are exclusive to the Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy chain. You get a lot of sheets for a very good price. The sheets are soft and stay damp, but the coolness is average. These are only available in a scented version, but the scent does not last as long.

● Tsuruha Kurashi-rism Reikan Body Sheet S (20 sheets, 327 yen)

Nice: ★★★☆☆
Long duration: ★★★★☆ (20 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★☆
Cost performance: ★★★☆☆

“Exclusive to Tsuruha Pharmacies. The sheets are large and stay wet, so one is enough to go from your neck to the soles of your feet. They don’t feel incredibly cool, but the feeling lasts a long time.

● Sun Drug The Body Sheet 06 (30 sheets, 263 yen)

Nice: ★★☆☆☆
Long duration: ★☆☆☆☆ (5 minutes)
Full Body Single Sheet Wiping Capacity: ★★★★★
Cost-performance ratio: ★★★★★

“30 sheets for this price is a really good deal. There’s a size small for these too, but I have the large sheets, and doing a full wipe down with them is a breeze. Honestly, they don’t feel that cool, but you can easily wick all the sweat off yourself. These are only available with a “white floral” scent, but it fades very quickly.
