MEDWAY, Mass. – A seventh grader from Plainville inspires so many with her brave spirit as she battles cancer for the second time.
Malia Jusczyk was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was 2 years old. She was cancer-free for nine years before being diagnosed with relapsing cancer.
“It was like the rug had been ripped out from under her,” said Megan Jusczyk, Malia’s mother.
Wanting to do something special for Malia, the community organized a football game on Friday night, giving Malia a chance to play the game she loves.
“So we’re really excited for her to have this opportunity and very grateful to both teams for putting this together so she can get out on the court and have that sense of normalcy even for just an hour, it’s very exciting. “said Megane.
The game took place at Lamson Field at Medway High School.
Malia is currently between treatments for neuroblastoma, a cancer that “almost always affects children” according to at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Malia’s parents started the “For the Sake of the Children Foundationto help raise funds for neuroblastoma research, as well as to help families of children diagnosed with cancer.
The foundation is hosting its 12th annual “5K & 10K Superhero Race to Squash Cancer” in Plainville next month. If you want to join a team, you can do it here link.
“It’s just a really great opportunity to bring people who care about Malia and childhood cancer together, and they can come and raise money for research,” Megan said of the event.
As for Malia, the return to the football field was a great success.
“What she misses the most is being on the football pitch, so she trained on Wednesday night and it was great…she had something to look forward to, to be back on the pitch at soccer. [Friday].”
